What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

What does AEO mean?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, means writing and structuring content so a search or AI engine can lift it as the answer to a specific question. Core tactics are question-style headings, a concise 40–60 word answer directly underneath, supporting detail after that, tables for comparisons, and FAQ and other structured data that matches the page.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap. AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search and focuses on answer formatting. GEO is broader and covers retrieval across AI indexes, brand entity signals and third-party corroboration. Most AI visibility programs use both: AEO formatting on every page and GEO work across the wider web.

Frequently asked questions
Does AEO still matter with AI Overviews?
Yes. AI Overviews and chatbots quote short, direct passages, which is exactly what AEO formatting produces.
Is FAQ schema required for AEO?
Not required, but structured data that matches visible content helps engines understand the question and answer pairs.
