What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are summaries generated by Google's Gemini models and shown above regular results for many queries. They draw on pages in Google's Search index and link to sources inline and in a side panel. Google uses query fan-out to search related sub-questions, so cited pages do not always rank first for the original query.

See query fan-out and the Google AI Overviews guide.

How do you get into AI Overviews?

Be indexed by Googlebot and eligible for snippets, then answer each likely sub-question with a short, direct passage under a clear heading. Add original facts, tables and examples. Google says no special markup is needed; the same quality and technical requirements as Search apply, and Google-Extended does not control inclusion.

Frequently asked questions

Can you opt out of AI Overviews?

Only through snippet controls like nosnippet, which also limit regular search snippets. Google-Extended does not remove you.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

For many informational queries they do, which is why being the cited source matters more than ranking below the summary.
