How to rank in Gemini and Google AI Overviews

Google's AI features draw on the same index as regular Search. That makes classic SEO the foundation, but AI Overviews and AI Mode also break one question into many sub-queries and cite the pages that answer each piece best.

How do Google AI Overviews and AI Mode pick sources?

AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve from Google's Search index, so a page must be crawled by Googlebot, indexed and eligible for snippets. Google then expands the question into related sub-queries, a process called query fan-out, and cites pages that answer those sub-questions clearly. Strong pages on adjacent questions win citations.

This is why a page can be cited in an AI Overview without ranking first for the main keyword. It ranked for one of the fan-out questions. Read more about query fan-out, AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Google's guidance is that no special markup is required for AI features. The same rules apply: helpful, original content, a crawlable site, and structured data that matches the visible page.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove you from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to train and ground Gemini models in Gemini apps and Vertex AI. It does not control AI Overviews or AI Mode, which run on Googlebot's index. To appear in Google's AI search features you need Googlebot access, indexing and snippet eligibility. Allow Google-Extended if you also want Gemini exposure.

  • Googlebot: required for Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Google-Extended: a robots.txt token for Gemini model use. It is not a separate crawler user agent.
  • nosnippet and max-snippet rules limit what Google can quote, including in AI features.

How do you get cited in Google AI answers?

Map the sub-questions behind each buyer prompt and give every one a clearly headed, answer-first section. Add tables, specific numbers and original insight that competing pages lack. Keep pages indexed and fast, use structured data that matches the page, and build entity signals so Google understands exactly who you are and what you do.

For Gemini itself, the same entity and corroboration work applies. Gemini draws on Google's understanding of your brand, so consistent descriptions across your site, schema and profiles matter. See entity SEO.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special schema to appear in AI Overviews?

No special schema is required. Structured data still helps Google understand the page, as long as it matches visible content.

Why does my page rank but never appear in AI Overviews?

Usually the answer is not stated directly enough, or other pages answer the fan-out sub-questions better. Put a short, direct answer under each question heading and cover the adjacent questions.

Can I track AI Mode visibility?

Yes. Our tool checks Google AI Overview and AI Mode results for your prompts and records whether you are cited, alongside the other AI engines.
