What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is when an AI search system expands a user's question into a set of narrower sub-questions, searches each one, and synthesizes the findings. Google has described it for AI Mode, and similar behavior appears in other AI search engines. A single prompt can trigger searches on features, prices, comparisons, reviews and alternatives.
Why does query fan-out matter for visibility?
Because citations come from the sub-queries, not just the original keyword. A page that clearly answers one sub-question, such as pricing or a comparison, can be cited even if it does not rank for the main term. Covering the full set of related questions across a topic cluster gives you more chances to be pulled in.
Read the Google AI Overviews guide for how to map fan-out questions.

| AI visibility service pricing | Pricing page with clear numbers |

Frequently asked questions
Can you see the fan-out queries?
Not directly. You infer them from the sources cited and from related searches, then cover those questions on your site.
Does fan-out only apply to Google?
No. Most AI search engines break complex prompts into multiple searches before answering.
